Integrative Veterinary Modalities
At Holistic Veterinary Options, routine preventative care focuses on supporting your pet's long-term health and catching potential problems early—before they become more serious or costly to treat. Preventative care is an important part of helping dogs and cats live long, healthy, and comfortable lives.
Our Preventative Care Services
Wellness Exams
Regular wellness exams allow the veterinarian to evaluate your pet's overall health. During these visits, we check things like weight, heart and lung function, skin and coat health, teeth and gums, and mobility. These exams also give us a chance to discuss nutrition, behavior, and any changes you've noticed at home. Detecting concerns early often leads to better outcomes.
Vaccinations
Vaccinations help protect pets from common and potentially serious diseases. For dogs, this can include vaccines for rabies, distemper, and other core illnesses. For cats, vaccines may include rabies and feline leukemia, depending on lifestyle and risk. Our team helps tailor vaccine recommendations to your pet's age, lifestyle, and exposure risk.
Vaccines We Don't Routinely Carry:
- Canine Influenza: Not recommended in our practice due to its low prevalence in our area.
- Lyme Vaccine: We do not offer this vaccine due to its variable efficacy, short duration of immunity, higher rate of adverse reactions, and ongoing controversy regarding its use.
Parasite Prevention
Preventing parasites is a key part of routine care. We help protect pets from:
- Heartworms
- Fleas and ticks
- Intestinal parasites
Testing and preventative medications help reduce the risk of infections that can affect your pet's health and comfort.
Diagnostic Screening
Routine Screening Tests
Routine screening tests help monitor your pet’s health and detect problems early, often before symptoms appear.
Common tests include:
- Heartworm testing (dogs)
- Fecal testing for intestinal parasites
- Bloodwork to evaluate organ function and overall health
Laboratory services:
- In-house testing: CBC, chemistry, and urinalysis for timely results
- Reference lab: Fecal samples and non-urgent bloodwork are sent to IDEXX for additional evaluation
Additional Preventative Services
Nutrition and Lifestyle
Proper nutrition and regular exercise play an important role in maintaining a healthy weight, supporting organ function, and preventing chronic disease. During visits, we can discuss diet, supplements, and activity levels to help support your pet's individual needs.
Dental Health
Dental care is another important part of preventative medicine. Regular dental evaluations and cleanings help prevent periodontal disease, which can lead to pain, tooth loss, and infections that affect other organs.
Grooming and Skin Care
While we do not offer full grooming services, we provide basic care and medical support related to skin and coat health. We perform nail trims to help prevent discomfort and mobility issues. During exams, we check for lumps and can perform fine needle aspirates (FNAs) when needed. We also help identify and treat skin and ear infections, ensuring your pet stays healthy and comfortable.
